About

Many policymakers and citizens do not understand the virtue of open data. We hope to change this by rapidly developing an open data service using real, high-value data. Sample applications will illustrate the possibilities of such open access.

Specifically, NC educational report card data is currently available via static HTML web pages, or in a Microsoft Access database on a CD if you pay ten dollars. We obtained a copy of the data on this CD, and we’ve chosen this as the basis for our prototype due to its high intrinsic interest to the public. We will illustrate some of the hurdles in the process of opening up the data and issues with the current solutions. Raleigh and Wake County are part of this data set so it is relevant and applicable on the local level. In the future, we plan to work with a contact in the North Carolina Public School System who works with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction to bring more data online.

  1. Hello NC Open Data,
I hope this message finds you very well. We came a cross your YouTube videos that give instructions for uploading data into opendata.socrata.com. We wanted to thank you for successfully using our site and for being an open data proponent.

Is there anything Socrata can do to either give you more functionality when publishing data or motivate the North Carolina government to be more open?

    Charles,

Just last night one of the team, Jason, finished the upload of the rest of the data set to Socrata. Now that this milestone is reached we will start serious thought about what else to do that Socrata can both help with, and perhaps benefit from. We are really excited to get started on this next phase of things! Look for more goings on, and likely some more direct communication.
